{My Review of Natural Beaded Rows Hair Extensions}

For as long as I can remember I have always had extremely fine and straight hair. The type of hair that no matter what you put in it will never hold a curl or any type of hair style. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my straight hair but having the same long, straight hair style for 31+ years isn’t ideal. A few years ago I went to the extreme and chopped it all off but even then, I couldn’t style it any different but straight. How boring! I had done research on hair extensions in the past but never actually committed to getting them. It seemed that I was more serious about extensions when I chopped all of my hair off. I tried the clip in extensions and they worked great until my hair wouldn’t blend properly with them. That’s when I found Natural Beaded Rows Hair Extensions.

The more time that went by the more I wanted to try these extensions out. I finally told my friend and hair stylist, Tiffany, that it was time to pull the trigger and test these extensions out. That was back in February and I am absolutely hooked. Not only is my hair thicker and luscious but my hair is actually holding a curl for DAYS! The great thing about having a more permanent hair extension option is that your real hair will blend with the extension hair and hold a curl better. It’s essentially training your hair to stay curled. I am also now able to add some fun colors in my hair which I’ve never been able to do. Since I had been dying my hair black for the majority of my life there was absolutely no way to safely strip my hair to add any type of color or dye.

Another huge plus with having these particular extensions is that you can easily put your hair up in a ponytail without seeing any trace of the extensions! Yes, please! That was my biggest concern when thinking about getting extensions. It is hard to put your hair up with tape-ins as you would see the tracks. Thankfully, the beads are the color of your hair and essentially invisible!

I definitely have had to change my hair care routine to maintain these extensions and keeping my hair/scalp healthy. First, I invested in a new hair dryer because these babies take quite sometime to dry! Click HERE if you missed my roundup of the best hair dryers for extensions. If I’m going to be in a rush I will take a shower at night, let my hair air dry over night and then blow dry the rest in the morning. It saves so much time. Second, I started taking Viviscal which promotes existing hair growth from within.

I’ve had so many people comment on how beautiful my hair has been looking now that it is curled. Can you imagine going your entire life with straight hair and then it’s all of a sudden fuller and curled?? Friends and family were all blown away when I told them I got hair extensions! No one had any idea whatsoever because these are so well hidden. That made me feel good because it’s the worst when people can tell… I’ve been on my fair share of styling commercials where our talent has a bad weave in.

Since I’ve been getting so many questions I wanted to do a quick video going over the process of installing the NBR, where to get it done in Austin and how it looks all finished. If you have any questions or comments about these extensions please leave a comment below so I can make sure I answer it in this post!

What are Natural Beaded Rows?

NBR (Natural Beaded Rows) are the next best thing in the world of hair extensions. They are natural, full, light-weight, and a comfortable hair extension option that is not going to damage your hair. There is absolutely no glue or taping involved; simply sewing the hair onto a beaded row.

How long does the process take?

Expect to be in the salon for 3 hours.

How long do the extensions last?

They grow with your natural hair so if you are used to getting your hair done every 6-8 weeks then that is how often you will have your extensions changed out.

Where to get them in Austin?

Tiffany Vogelpohl of Bowie Street Collective is a certified NBR stylist in Austin, TX. If you aren’t in Austin click HERE to see if there are any NBR stylists in your area.

I had my nbr extensions taken out after almost 3 months due to my stylist became to expensive for Montgomery NY. The hair was cheap and coarse didn’t match my texture at all. I was left with a couple of bald spots, thinning hair and breakage. I only had them in since December. They pull on your hair, especially in the front where my most of the breakage and baldspots were. I’m going to stick to clip ins.

Oh no!!! I hate to hear that! I definitely think everyone’s hair is so different and not all work with these types of extensions. I personally haven’t had any issues since I’ve had these in the last year or so. Clip ins are a great option and something I had used quite a bit prior to the NBR! Thank you for sharing your experience! I definitely like hearing the good, bad and the ugly to share with everyone.

I’m intrigued! What’s the average cost for getting these extensions?

    • September 4, 2018 / 7:58 pm

It varies depending on who installs them but my gal charges about $350 plus the cost of the hair.

They look great but I experienced extreme pain, headaches and an allergic reaction on my scalp and a very itchy rash all over my body from the metal beads. So painful I couldn’t sleep at night. I had to take them out after 5 days and wasted a lot of money. As soon as I took them out the rash went away.

    • February 19, 2019 / 3:33 pm

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that!! You’re actually the first person I have ever heard that happen to!

Love this post! I’ve been interested in NBR extensions for quite a while because my hair is thin & when it does grow, it’s stingy & not pretty at all. I have 2 questions- Can you wear your hear natural with these or will it look like a hot mess? And two- Is it the same cost to have these moved up as it is to initially “install”? Love your blog, btw! 🙂

HI!! Thank you so much for your sweet words!!
YES – you can 100% wear your hair natural with these extensions!! That’s why I love them so much. I am the most low maintenance person when it comes to my hair and I wanted something that would work with that lifestyle and sure enough, I can wear it straight without styling, curled, or up in a high bun or pony tail and you can’t see them at all!
NO – It is MUCH cheaper to have them moved up! The initial install includes the cost of the hair and initial hair cut! 😉
Let me know if you have any more questions!!

Your hair looks so good! I have the same type of hair, long, straight and doesn’t hold a curl, so I’m so happy I found your post. I’ve been thinking about getting NBR extensions and I was wondering, did you get one or two rows and at what length? Also, prior to your extensions, did your hair get oily quickly? Mine currently gets oily within 24 hours and I’m hoping the extensions help with that also! Thank you!

Hi there! I had 2 rows and I believe they were 18″. Extensions don’t really help with your scalp producing oil so it will most likely be the same. Hope that info. helps!
