DTKAustin shares tips on how to take the best family holiday and Christmas cards with Minted.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The time of the year when everyone is scrambling to get their holiday cards out. Can y’all believe this is the first year Grayson and I are sending out Christmas cards? I’m shocked, considering we’ve been together over 6 years and have taken PLENTY of photos together! Every year that goes by I always tell myself we’ll get to that next year… and then another year goes by and I tell myself the same thing. Not this year!! We made a point to shoot some fun Christmas card photos for our 2017 holiday cards! I hate to even admit it but this is the first time I have sent out cards! It was so fun to get our little family together to take some adorable family Christmas card photos out at a Christmas tree farm in Austin! The cards came out so dang cute too!

But how do you go about creating unique holiday cards year after year? As a wardrobe stylist, I get asked this question ALL the time. I am going to give you my tips and tricks on how to seamlessly get more organized for your Christmas card photos.

Find a location – One of my favorite places to shoot holiday cards has to be at a Christmas tree farm! We found the cutest spot outside of Austin and had a blast roaming around and taking fun photos with Steven. When picking a location it’s important to figure out if you want indoors or outside. If you are shooting indoors you will most likely need a soft-box or a flash for lighting, so make sure your photographer has something available, if the natural light isn’t ideal inside. If you are shooting outside, make sure you shoot at golden hour right before the sun sets or early in the morning for the perfect sunrise shot. Don’t forget to think about locations that will complement your outfits. You don’t want to shoot at a location that is too busy with your outfits. After all, you and your family are the main focus.

Cohesive Outfits – Whether you have kids or not, this is something that is important if you want an eye-catching card. That should be eye-catching in a good way! I’ve seen plenty of cards that have been an eye sore… but they sure caught my eye! Picking complementary color palettes will make it even easier. During the holidays I see a lot of reds, neutrals, detailed LBDs and/or plaids paired with denim. In the summer stick with more of a neutral color palette such as blues, nudes and subtle whites. Just as a reminder, try and stay away from small prints, solid whites or solid black pieces. They tend to get lost in photos or video.

Hire a Photographer – Picking a photographer can really make or break your photos. Depending on what you are looking for will depend on if you want a pro or to just use a self timer and take the photos yourself. Personally, I love hiring photographers because they will normally scout the location, do all of the shooting and edit everything. All we have to do is find a card layout and import the photo and BAM! We’re ready to print and mail out.

Choose the perfect card and envelopesMinted is my go-to, one-stop-shop for all things holiday card. If you are in the market for some unique, personalized Christmas and holiday cards make sure you check them out. There are literally hundreds of layouts you can choose for the perfect card. We went with one of the simpler designs with a photo on the front and back. I decided to not add any writing on the cards so we could use a metallic pen to write our own personalized messages on each one. Minted gives the option to pre-address your cards with stamps on then envelopes too. If you are in saving money mode you can skip that option and hand address and stamp them yourselves, which is what we did.

Overall, just remember to KISS! Keep it simple stupid. And don’t forget to actually kiss and really enjoy yourselves!
