Happy Thursday, friends! I hope everyone is having a fabulous week so far. SXSW is upon us Austinites so before all of the craziness starts I wanted to do a quick post on a look that anyone can pull off, no matter their size. Vests are a trend that I have fallen in love with and they don’t seem to be going out of style, thankfully. Over the past few years I have accumulated so many vests and sadly, I just keep forgetting to wear them until I saw this stunner at Zara. It brought back all of my best vest memories and I knew I just had to have this one because of the unique grommet and lace-up detailing on the front.
Who else is a fan of a good vest but doesn’t necessarily know how to wear them? One reason I am a huge fan of vests is that you can literally layer them over almost any and every outfit you are wearing. There isn’t really anything a vest doesn’t go with; jeans, shorts, leggings, tanks, sweaters, long sleeve tops, etc. I always tell people that if they are looking for a little extra oomph in their OOTD (outfit of the day) then grab a vest and it will make all the difference.
I’m sure you’re thinking, but Ashley, there are SO many vest options out there… How do I know what is right for me? Good hypothetical question! 😁 There ARE a ton of vest options out there and I have to say, the ones I gravitate towards are longer and have a more tailored look. This type of vest is going to look slimming on anyone, especially if there is a gathered back, ties at the side or even a lace-up option like the vest I am wearing in the photos below. You have to be careful with vests that are asymmetrical or tiered at the front because those tend to make people look larger than they actually are.
I paired this vest with skinny jeans and a cute, lace cami to transition this vest into Spring. This vest is on the heavier side, in addition to being black. If you are wanting to get more wear out of your winter vests then pair them with something a little more on the summery side. Since this vest is heavy, I didn’t want to throw it on with a dress because the detail would be overwhelmed by the weight of the vest and will end up making you look larger. For vests like these I highly suggest you wearing either skinny jeans or a wider leg slack with a cami or blouse so the vest flows with the entire look. Let the vest be the focal point of your look and it will all blend perfectly!

I’ve always loved vests, but yep, totally never known quite how to make them work for me. I think with my height, longline vests would be fun for me to try out. I’ll have to take your inspo and create something fun for myself sometime soon! Your vest is gorgeous!

I just recently got my first vest and had to actually hide it for a while cause I was wearing it with everything! LOL And you’re right, I I gravitated towards a more tailored looking one. I do love the lace up detail on yours–it makes such a statement. I’m having serious SXSW #FOMO over here–I’m in Houston but pregnant so I wasn’t physically up for it! xoxo
The detailing on that vest is too cute! You look amazing per usual! XO, Jaime Sunflowers and Stilettos
