{How to Easily Customize Your Own Faux Leather Jacket}

DTKAustin shares her ultimate DIY Project. How to paint one of your old faux leather jackets with acrylic paint. Click for more information, how-to's and photos.

Who else has too many black, faux leather jackets that are just sitting in your closet taking up space? I literally think I have 4-5 right now… If this sounds like you and you love everything DIY and fashion, I have the ultimate project for you! Custom painting those unused and old leather jackets. My friend Niki sent me a photo of a hand-painted floral, black leather jacket and immediately asked where she had found that. To my surprise, she actually painted it all herself in a matter of 2 hours… If this were me, it would have taken me days and would definitely not have come out as nice!

Knowing how many people out there love DIY projects and most likely have 1 or 2 faux leather jackets lying around, I wanted to get a quick how-to post up! The photo below is the finished, painted version of the iconic BlankNYC faux jacket that everyone had stocked up on last Fall. If you’re wanting to give it a revamp for the upcoming cooler temps, this is the best way to do it while saving some money. I know I don’t want to buy yet another faux leather jacket when I could give one of my others a fun, floral update!

Sadly, this exact jacket is sold out but I have linked a few options below if you need a jacket to paint for this DIY job!

Step 2. Find a photo of what you’re wanting to paint – Flowers are such an easy go-to because you can get as abstract as you want. You can always Google or search Pinterest for floral illustrations for inspiration.

Step 3. Get your supplies ready – You’ll need brushes, acrylic paint and something to put your paint on that won’t absorb it.

When choosing paint – Choose some bold colors that will pop against the background and don’t forget white and black for highlights and shadows.

Step 4. Clean the areas you are wanting to paint

Step 5. Paint away!

This is definitely a budget friendly way to make your old, black jacket into something eye catching and different than anything anyone else will ever have. Those are always my favorite kind of projects!

    This is such a cool idea. I usually just add grommets, studs, and patches but I’ll have def have to try painting. I’ve used the paint on denim and love the way that looks.

    You’re so freaking talented haha I’m not artistic at all so I’m not sure that my flowers would turn out so cute. This really made the jacket look like a whole new wardrobe piece!

    Okay this is the coolest idea ever. Yours turned out so amazing, I could never paint flowers like that lol. But I have a tan leather jacket in my closet that I might need to try this on!
