{The Stylish Side of the BMW i3}

A fashion editorial or commercial shoot isn’t all about the clothing but the entire photo as a whole. This orange BMW i3 was the perfect prop for this conceptual shoot with one of my photographer friends, Cody Hamilton. I rarely talk about any of my commercial styling jobs on this blog but since I actually modeled in this one I figured I could give a little insight into what all goes into a shoot like this from the photographers point of view to the styling side. This was shot about two years ago and I’m just now getting around to posting it solely because I added it on Facebook and people seemed to love it! HA!

When working on a job like this I will get all of the inspiration from the photographer including his concept, color scheme and what type of feel they are going for, etc. Since I was essentially styling myself I had a much easier time with shopping as I know exactly what is going to look good one me which equals less prep. I was told we would be shooting in an area that was very blue with a bright orange car which means absolutely no color for me but nothing too dark either. Wardrobe was pretty simple as I would be wearing more neutrals but still needed to have enough detail to have the outfit stand out against all of the color. I opted for this grey asymmetrical skirt, a light blush pink top and a pair of patent leather, black heels. Obviously, if I were styling someone else there would be a lot more to consider with how many important specifications there are to create the perfect image.

I know this photo looks like any other photo that someone could just take with an iPhone but surprisingly, a lot of work when into every single of the six shots shown in this post. If I put the unedited photo next to one below you would definitely be able to see how much work actually went into producing a final product. Most professional images you see in ads or on TV have been heavily retouched. All of you have probably seen the backlash retouching has received over the years when editing people’s bodies. Retouching is everywhere, even in photos that have where a human isn’t the focus.

So what all goes into the production of a simple shoot like this one?

Find a location that will meet all of the photographer’s specifications. We needed a large area that was a solid color that would work with the bright orange BMW. Then, we had to source a car! Next, find the talent and have wardrobe ready to go. Have a camera rig for the car. Keep in mind, that super high, overhead shot wasn’t taken with a drone. (Check out the behind the scenes shot at the end of this post and you’ll see what was used) Shooting each idea takes quite some time as well. I can’t tell you how many times I had to open the door, or fake get out of the car. With each setup Cody was spraying the concrete with water to make it dark enough and easier to edit the flaws off of the ground. I can’t speak for Cody, but I can only imagine how long retouching took on each of these photos. It takes a lot time and effort to get perfection and I think we nailed it with this shoot!

Take notice of how much editing went into the sky, the walls, the concrete, etc. I mean, just look at the photo above compared to the image below. Pretty amazing editing!

    No one ever realizes the amount of work that goes into these types of shoots. It’s crazy but all so worth it because look how great the pictures turned out. The outfit you picked was still very you but complimented the scene.
